MacBook Pro - Image 1All for the pursuit of elegance and longer battery life: the new MacBook is rumored to be launched without an optical drive built-in, disorienting those who are used to the quite reassuring presence of the DVD (or CD) drive.

Why take out the DVD drive, though? The new MacBook will sport an ultra-thin package, so the bulky DVD drive has to be removed in order to accommodate the MacBook's diet plans. Battery life was also considered a factor, and it's quite obvious how the removal of an optical drive will boost a laptop's battery life. It may also make the MacBook more durable, with less moving parts in its innards.

If the removal of the DVD drive from the new MacBooks turn out to be true, it's going to cause a lot of commotion. People may lament the loss of the DVD drive, thinking about software installation and DVD burning. Don't fret: that's what the external optical drives are for.

sorry for the tripple in a row posts, but how would you install OS X or even use the Disk in these new macbooks? The disks are DVDs!

 » OS installations

If I remember correctly, some IBM laptops have the OS installer stored in their harddrives, ready to use in case the laptop needs to be reset to factory settings. Apple may implement a similar method to install the OS :)

aren't the re-install disks used when you can't start up your computer properly, and thus can't get to the IBM style installer?

And what if you want to upgrade your OS?

 » why not

a few years ago a college needed help as her apple wall street crapped out and would not boot. I had a 512mb flash card in my camera and we had a PC card CF reader. I simply dumped a bootable system from my wall street to the CF and with this booted her wall street and was able to run Apples disk utility to repair the problem. This was in the days of MacOS 9. we have moved technically much further now and a usb stick of 2GB costs very little these days. Why use an expensive optical drive that is hungry for power when a usb stick can deliver the goods.
