If you really, really had to party with your iPod like it was 19... er, 89, and you're on a budget, you could try packing together your iPod and a couple of speakers into a Tupperware container and turn it into a makeshift boombox, just like what leevonk out at instructibles.com did. You'll need your iPod, those couple of speakers (that will run off a battery), some Styrofoam or soft-foam packing material, and a see-through Tupperware container that'll fit your iPod and those two PC speakers. Raiding neighborhood Tupperware parties is optional.
First step is to position everything in place against what will be the front of your "boombox" - (most cases, the lid, just like leevonk's). iPod in the center, speakers to each side. You'll need to cut holes for the iPod's control wheel and the speakers. leevonk cut additional holes in his setup: a pair of holes along the top to serve as a makeshift handle and to allow him to slide his iPod in and out of the stereo; and a couple along the bottom end of the container to add a hinge for the lid. Other do-it-yourself-ers may have other ideas. Finally, the soft foam is used to pack in everything nice and tight, prevent the iPod - or everything else, for that matter - from sliding around, and to hide unsightly speaker cords. What's really nice about this setup is that it can be customized, and amped up anyway the user likes his boombox to turn out. leevonk's other ideas include adding a battery pack (for the speakers to run off from, extending the playback time of the iPod's battery) and a few CCFT lamps. With a little room other components could also be added, such as an amp - or you could build your own amp and hook that up to your setup instead. And trade in that Tupperware for even more imaginative and wild casings, like a flashlight! We may be seeing the explosion of DIY-"mod casings" for iPod-speaker setups. This is not the only DIY iPod boombox we featured. One of those DIYs, though, took an actual boombox and transplanted an iPod into it. Talk about bringing your old-school stuff into the 21st century. |
