eMacTech guy Tom Ierna is the proud owner of an Apple eMac. When he found out that his beloved computer's analog board was in need of replacement, and that a new one would cost a whopping $500 (and, in addition, that his machine couldn't qualify for Apple's warranty repair extension), he began to consider drastic measures.

Ierna spotted a Samsung 17" flatscreen monitor and came up with the bright idea of replacing the eMac's problematic old CRT with an LCD, which would allow him to bypass that faulty analog board and give his eMac a new lease on life. And his hard work paid off! His modded eMac's a beaut!

He's posted an illustrated procedure on his blog, which I've condensed and summarized for your viewing pleasure.

STEP ONE. Dismantle the eMac (Ierna's got no pix of this step; there are apparently manuals for this sort of thing online.)

STEP TWO. Remove the analog board and CRT. (Be very careful with the CRT! Discharge it and dispose of it properly!)

STEP THREE. Take everything out until the faceplate looks as follows:

STEP FOUR. Set the logic board aside (and take care that the hard and optical drives are still attached when you do so).

STEP FIVE. Ready the LCD monitor.

STEP SIX. Use the bezel of the LCD monitor to trace the new opening on the eMac's faceplate.

eMac

STEP SEVEN. Cut the opening.

STEP EIGHT. Place the LCD into the newly-widened eMac faceplate.

STEP NINE. Stuff the LCD's innards into the faceplate and use tape to keep it straight until the CRT cowl is placed back in.

STEP TEN. Put the CRT cowl back on the faceplate.

STEP ELEVEN. Make eMac power connector to hard drive connector.

eMac

STEP TWELVE. Make eMac video connector to VGA connector.

eMac

STEP THIRTEEN. Scavenge a power supply. Ierna got his from an old SCSI hard drive case that was more than adequate for this purpose.

eMac

STEP FOURTEEN. Solder the IEC end of a power cord for the LCD monitor on the appropriate pads of the new power supply. Then reconnect the eMac's frame.

STEP FIFTEEN. Place the power supply anywhere suitable.

eMac

STEP SIXTEEN. Plug everything together and see how it looks.

eMac

STEP SEVENTEEN. Look for a place where the LCD monitor controls can be mounted.

eMac eMac

STEP EIGHTEEN. Carefully cut a hole in the case for the monitor controls.

STEP NINETEEN. Put the whole thing back together.

Et voila!
