Microsoft Beats Nintendo, Sony in BusinessWeek's Most Innovative - Image 1

BusinessWeek recently released its list of The World 50 Most Innovative Companies. Companies are ranked according to votes made by nearly 3,000 executives from the largest corporations in the world.

Now if you're into the business side of video gaming - or if you're just curious - you probably want to know how the manufacturer of your favorite console fared. This year, Microsoft was ranked above its competitors, Sony and Nintendo.

Microsoft was listed as the 5th most innovative companies in the world, while Nintendo ranked at 7th place, and Sony at 9th. Last year, Microsoft also ranked above the other two, while Sony was at 10th place and Nintendo at 39th.

It must be noted that considerations for voting were centered on the companies' products - meaning all of the companies' products during the time period and not just their consoles. Now with that in mind, it comes to no surprise who topped this year's list (again). Guess who? None other than Apple...

I was wondering that too, I think Nintendo should get it even though I don't really like the Wii.

Yeah i think micro soft is pretty cool guy, eh innovatives and doesnt afraid of anything like man they like innovate ans they....look at theyre new controller coming out it has motion sensing and everything!!!!1!!1 and teh even plan to make a thing were u can make your own little characters!!! theyz tottally deserves this

 » your really sad

you realise that they are not being innovative at all. Innovating means to create something new or make something old even better. Microsoft is just copying nintendo and honestly i find it pathetic, i hope they are paying nintendo a really big royalty fee and i hope their motion games are ***** because theres nothing orignal about their console except for being the first with best online experience second to have huge failure rate and finally although their are more to release a console with a powersupply that is almsot as big as the console

that Obsidian was kidding...kinda taking a stab at Microsoft for not being innovative...get it?

....?Que?....

I thought that everyone knew that Nintendo was the most innovative company, I mean no one though of the Wii which is quite innovative. I would have liked for Sony to have won (hate Microsoft with a passion) but I'm pretty most people no that Nintendo can be pretty innovative when you put all fanboy-ism and bias aside.

 » Nintendo innovation?

Let's see: a console which is basically just a revised Gamecube (itself never the pinnacle of technology), married with motion-sensing controllers which require a sensor-bar in order to operate (whereas Sony's are self-contained). Innovation? I think the better description is "very adept at marketing" (much like #1, Apple). I mean, as much as I also hate Microsoft, I won't say that they don't innovate. They may have some devious ways of doing things, but they aren't a stagnant company, if you consider their whole portfolio. To be honest (since the article says the scores were given by top executives across the country), I think it's rather ridiculous that Nintendo places anywhere in the Top 10, let alone above Sony. Because when you look at the entire Sony portfolio (Games, TV, Audio, Cell phones, etc etc), Nintendo can't even begin to compare. Moreover, from what I understand, it's not like there's a whole huge list of games for the Wii which are really 'changing the rules'. Wii Sports, and .... what? Mario? ---Innovation? ...please.

Innovation for Microsoft awhile back maybe when they made a computer into a gaming machine we know as the XBOX but although they were the first to do online gaming and use a hard drive on a console, Sony was the first to let us watch full length movies on a console, have Blu-ray, and allow portable game system to talk to a console wirelessly as well as a bunch of other stuff. I hope Microsoft makes a portable game system in the future. Maybe the can finally catch up to Sony in innovation in that perspective.

 » Dude...

Sony was first to use online and a HDD on a console its just that it came with the XBOX thats the difference. You have to buy the network adapter and the HDD with the PS2.

I thought the Famicon or maybe it was the Super Famicon had something like that in Japan but never really took off.

 » ok...

remember people that sony and microsoft is beyond gaming devices... I guess what top microsoft at 5 was the microsoft surface but without a doubt apple deserve to be in the top of the line. Sony with the most tiny OLED deserve a better spot.

 » Seriously tho....

what a bunch of S*** nintendo has innovated and risked things more times than micro soft has and they get what? fifth F'ing place while nintendo is 39th thats almost hilarious

 » yeah...

M$ never showed any kind of innovations after XBL (on the xbox 1). The x360 is leading, and it have good games, but this have nothing to do with M$...

I'd put sony and nintendo at the same place, since sony is non-stop on updates and new features while the wii is another spelling for innovation.

So I'd say M$ in last position.

BUT, this is NOT on consoles but companies innovation, and we know nothing about this. I mean, M$ is surely ranked high because they have a good position with the x360, and because they popped the zune 2 too, that scored okay too. While sony is always doing more of everything, so it's harder to innovate for them (they already make all the stuff). And for nintendo, it's impossible to win this since they only make consoles and games.

Useless news anyway, and as boring to read as to write a comment in it...

 » Nintendo Innovative?

Which Mario Party are we up to now? 85? Which Pokemon are we still playing on handheld controller? Invisible? Which console is the last to incorporate OPTICAL MEDIA and a HARD DRIVE? Nintendo? Which company basically rehashed its own POWER PAD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Pad) for the Wii? Nintendo?

Nintendo hasn't made anything new or innovated in decades. All of its "creations" are borrowed from some other creation.

As for apple, they only pretty-up and elite-up already existing products.

 » How about that

Microsoft is more innovative than Nintendo and Sony 2 years in a row! At least Nintendo did better than 39th place this year. I think Sony should still beat Nintendo though because of the Dualshock 3 and Blu Ray.

   by robbo16 - 2008-04-22
» it doesnt go on just games

they made the 360 which to be honest wasnt really innovative as used pretty much last gen stuff in terms of dvd drive n that. but were not just talking about consoles. they make vista quite innovative but have you heard about that table thing there bringing out. its like a pc but (the only info i know is)you can put your zne down and it will recognise its on the table and when you move ongs over you can copy them onto it. thats innovation alot more than putting a motion sensor control. google it i think its called the microsoft surface

ohh and I want to add that Businessweek is AMERICAN, just like Microsoft. Sony + Nintendo are JAPANESE. Coincidence? We all know of the patriotism of the USA.

Furthermore, this whole list is *****ed up.
C'mon Apple on the first place? For what?
Combining a MP3-player with a mobile phone?
Every mobile has a MP3-player now. This is standard since...5 years?
And Google? For what? the search-eng
