iTunes - Image 1

A few recording artists have taken to blaming iTunes for the decline of album sales in recent years. While online music sales continue to rise, overall album sales as well as CD sales in general have steadily dwindled.

One of these artists is Kid Rock, whose latest album "Rock 'n' Roll Jesus" has sold 1.7 million copies since June. Rock's manager, Ken Levitan, told the Wall Street Journal that had they gone the iTunes route, most of the sales would show up as 99 cent downloads of the song "All Summer Long".

"In so many ways it's turned our business back into a singles business," said Levitan. Selling a lot of singles do not necessarily equate into a bigger revenue than selling fewer albums.

While it can be said that most music albums these days just have one or two good songs and a lot of crappy filler tracks, how are we to know if the songs that never got airplay are indeed crappy or not if we don't  try listening to them? This was also a point of contention for the artists, who worry that listeners may never even sample enough material from an album to form an informed opinion.

And what if artists do stop going with the iTunes model? They always run the risk of losing profit because of consumers who would rather turn to other, less legal means of getting a song that's not available for download as a single. It's a bit of a conundrum. What do you guys think?

 » Not surprising

Considering most albums as a whole aren't very good at all these days. Why would anyone want to pay for tracks on a CD they don't like?

 » EXACTLY!

Couldn't agree more. Maybe these bands should just stop making crap tracks only to make the album fatter.

Having said that, I do think iTunes' track preview could last a bit longer.

As has already been said, maybe these "artists" should quit making ***** and start ramping up the quality of their music. Oh wait... that's right, you CAN'T because you were ALREADY *****.

Maybe instead of complaining, Kid Rock should make something other than a radio bubblegum single based on ripping off old songs anyway.

First you make crap music and sell the cds based on 1 song that sheep-minded children become addicted to, and then you complain when a new economic model calls you out on it.... hahaha I feel really bad for this clown and his million dollar house built on celebrity BS.

 » The record industry...

They only have themselves to blame. By making it a standard practice of making singles out of the 2 or 3 best songs on the album, then cramming the rest with filler and not even coming close to the storage limitation of the media... well, lets just say they've been digging their own grave for a long time.

I will admit there have been a few albums I've bought that have surprised me, but those have all been from dedicated artists like NIN and Poe, not the "get rich" crowd.

Seriously, if an artist wants to survive the black plague that's ailing the recording industry behemoth they should get out and go indie. Your true fans will respect you more when you're making music for yourself. It really shows when you do something because you care about it rather than just doing it to make a buck.

Why I'm going to pay for something I don't want to use in the first place?

I am tired of listening to these people whine and cry about losing money. For years now WE the consumer have been telling these people they are not worth the money they charge. They should be happy and content that they are being paid millions for really nothing!! While i work my arse off just to keep up!! Musicians and everybody in that business can kiss my arse!!

» Did 45s discourage full album sales?

A long time ago singles were released on records for the purpose of boosting album sales. Maybe if White trash rocker kid rock put out decent albums people would buy the whole thing.
Message to kid rock if you really hate iTunes that much pull you entire catalog from there and let people only buy your CDs in the stores. Didn't think so.
