iChat hologit - Image 1New Leopard users who want more bang for their buck may want to try activating one of the missing features that should have made it into the final version of Leopard: the Star Wars hologram effect for iChat and PhotoBooth. We're not sure why these effects were cut our from the final version in the first place, but as long as we get them it doesn't matter, yes?

The steps needed to install or activate this awesome iChat effect involves a bit of tweaking, but the steps written by Mac Rumors poster elbows are thoroughly explained enough to guide even those unfamiliar with manipulating codes. In any case, the end result is worth it, so give it a try if you have Apple's OS X Leopard.

Check out the detailed steps in the Read link!

Apple iPhone - Image 1Those worried about the Safari TIFF exploit found in the Apple iPhone can rest easier thanks to an unexpected source: the AppSnap iPhone hacking application.

Apart from jailbreaking the iPhone and getting it ready for third-party applications, AppSnap also fixes Apple's TIFF bug. This is also the exact same exploit used by AppSnap to jailbreak the iPhone.

Please note that jailbreaking the iPhone will not unlock it. AppSnap does open the iPhone to installation of other third-party applications, however, so after running it you can then run any of the many unlocking applications available for the iPhone.

iPod.iTunesiPod owners will be happy to know that crispSofties has recently released a new build for the iPod.iTunes tool for your Apple iPod. For the guys asking what this does, it synchronizes your iPod and computer, and evaluates the source for songs, videos and/or playlists (either from your machine or from the iPod) and only adds these.

And unlike the iPod's default auto-update function, iPod.iTunes doesn't delete content in its target, and can  transfer song-dependent data like My Rating, Last Played, Album Artwork, and more. This latest build is now at version 3.6.1 - we'll post a sample of the current changelog to give you an idea about what's been improved:
  • Version 3.6.1
    • For slower Macs with large iTunes libraries some functions have higher timeout values.
  • Version 3.6
    • iPod.iTunes has now the ability to update itself, as soon a newer release is available. This is done with one single click, making it much more easy to update the application. So I can release more often fixes/changes as soon they are done. If an update is available, you are presented by a list of the changes between your current version and the new version.
    • Connecting/disconnecting iPods: No need to relaunch iPod.iTunes any longer to recognize an iPod.
    • Synchronization to iPod: A possible "No more space left on iPod"-message (when there was space) will no longer appear.
    • Mac OS 10.3.9: Fixed a possible problem regarding the recognition of the iTunes library file.
    • Some fixes regarding the program flow.
    • Various smaller changes in the user interface (mostly message texts).
  • Version 3.5.2
    • Compatibility for iTunes 7.4.2
Before you download this tool, keep in mind that iPod.iTunes reportedly does not work on either the iPod shuffle or the iPod Touch. There are two version available: One if for Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.10, the other is for Mac OS X 10.2.8 to 10.3.8. The downloads are available at the crispSofties site, via the read link.

Developer opera is announcing the release of the latest build of the iNdependence application. This Mac OS X app is based on the Cocoa application programming environment (API), and will provide users with a means of jailbreak activation, SSH installation, and ringtone/wallpaper/application installation on their iPhones. Here are the updates leading up to version 1.2.3:
  • iNdepencence: Jailbreak interface for the Mac OS X - Image 1 Version 1.2.3:
    • This version fixes a number of bugs in version 1.2.2, makes 1.1.1 activation a bit easier, and also adds the ability to have 3rd party applications show up in SpringBoard when using the 1.1.1 phone firmware. If you have previously used iNdependence version 1.2.2 to jailbreak/activate a 1.1.1 phone, and want to use 3rd party applications, use the included SpringBoardPatcher application.
  • Version 1.2.2:
    • This version works with phone firmware 1.1.1, although the activation/jailbreak process is a bit more complicated now. The documentation has been moved from the README file into the Help menu within the application itself, so please read through that before asking questions.
    • Please note that if you have used anySIM or other free SIM unlocking solutions (anything except for the iPhoneSimFree solution), and you upgrade to 1.1.1, it will wipe out the SIM unlock and render the phone and text message part of your phone inoperable. Everything else will work though.
  • Notes:
    • This program does not work with the iPod Touch [You'll need iJailbreak for that]
    • This program will not perform a SIM unlock. However, it will activate your phone with any type of SIM card.
    • Starting with version 1.1.1 (and higher), iNdepdendence has been updated to work with iTunes 7.4. Do not use previous versions of iNdependence with iTunes 7.4 as it (in combination with a bad iTunes restore) could cause your phone to endlessly reboot!
Users who have further questions regarding this application will want to visit opera's site for further information (via the source link).

iJailbreak - Image 1The first release of iJailbreak for the iPod Touch is here. For those who are new with the "jailbreaking" scene, it was first started by Niacin, Dre, Martyn, NerveGas, and the rest of their team. They had created a preliminary jailbreak for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The release today is of iJailbreak v0.2.1 - a jailbreaking application built on the preliminary hack from last week.

iJailbreak is a program that you run on your Mac OS X Tiger - yeah, as for now, the Power PC users would have to sit and wait a bit -  so that you can basically "free up" you iPod Touch to allow third party applications. What's interesting here is that it was coded by AriX, a 13 year old!

You can download the app below and install it on your Mac. Just be careful with working on this as there have already been reports of freeze ups. If anything happens, you can still always restore your iPod back to factory default settings using iTunes.

Download: iJailbreak v0.2.1

Apple launches WebApp Directory for iPhone, iTouch - Image 1Apple has launched a web apps directory for the iPhone and iPod Touch which compiles various websites designed specifically for the 3.5 inch touch screen of both units.

These include access to Digg, ESPN, Facebook, and other various websites. Web application developers should take note that they can also submit their original work to Apple.

If they like it and passes their standards, then they'll place it up on the site for other users to enjoy. As of this article's writing there are 215 applications available on the directory, so you will probably find something there that you'll want.

This was a great idea from Apple, and will undoubtedly make life much easier for many people who regularly surf the web with their iPhone or iTouch. If we may add, this also seems the company's answer to the unprecedented number of underground programs springing up left and right.

If you want to know more about the service, click on the Read link below.

Trillian goes Mac OS X - Image 1

Move over Mr. Green Duckie! The popular Windows IM client that is Trillian is now headed to the Mac OS X platform. Now how's that for some good news for the Apple fanatics? Yes, there's Adium - which I hold so dear to my heart, BTW - but the prospect of getting Trillian as well is still something worth gushing over. This goes to show that more and more applications are "porting" their way to Mac.

Cerulean Studios, the guys developing the software, have been able to retain the core functions of Trillian as it is on Windows, Flash, and iPhone. But what's going to be different with the Mac OS X version is that it is re-written from scratch on Objective-C and Cocoa. They've managed to already come up with an alpha version, and it's still going under tests. If you want to be part of the testing pool, you can jump in on the fun via the Read link below, where you can get more details.

Meanwhile, everyone else - Adium fans included - is excited to see the public version for Trillian on Mac. There's no info on when Cerulean Studios will release it, but you can bet your Duckie, we'll be right on it with updates.

If you're still not satisfied with the amount of rhythm games out there for the Wii and you're just interested in a little freestyle jamming, then some students from the University of Potsdam in Germany have just the thing for you. Using a Wii controller and the Nunchuk attachment, they've created a program which simulates playing a drum set complete with an adjustable system included to it.

The program makes use of the Bluetooth wireless system to connect to the Mac and transmits the motions taken from the Wiimote into sound. It even uses the accelerometer to measure how hard you're beating your virtual drumsticks and reflects the loudness or harshness of the sound. In fact, if you take a look at the video below, you'll notice there's no delay with the hitting of the "drums" and the sound they make.

What's more is that the program itself is free! This open source creation is easily downloadable at their website at ScreenFashion and can easily be tweaked using customizable MIDI settings for those who want to experiment with their own creations. So until Nintendo decides to release their own drum simulator, you can access the site through the read link below for those interested in downloading this freestyle drumbeating rhythm simulator.

Turn you iPhone into an iTunes remote with Signal - Image 1If you've been looking for ways to control iTunes, Winamp, or Windows Media Player from the iPhone then you might want to consider using Alloysoft's Signal. This application turns the unit into a remote control allowing users to control playback, browse media libraries, or edit playlists on their desktops.

Signal also works with various streaming solutions including Airport Express, allowing it to be used as a remote control for stereos as well. Operating system compatibility should not be a problem since the program will run on both Macs and PCs. With regards to what else the program can do, here's a list of its key features taken from the official website:
  • Play, pause, and stop your music
  • Move between songs in the playlist
  • Adjust the volume
  • Rate songs
  • See the current album art
  • Browse and search your media library
  • Add songs to the queue
  • Remove songs from the queue
  • Adjust EQ settings
If you you want to get more information you can visit the official site of the program via our Read Link.
