The iTunes movie store - Image 1

Here's a not-so-good news for Apple iTunes movie buffs: Apple has decided to raise the average prices of movies for sale at the iTunes store to US$ 15 as a concession to movie studios. In exchange, the studios, have opted to churn out their latest movie releases for the iTunes store.

Apple apparently decided to push through with the price increase in order to gain extra support for its iTunes service. Movie studios such as 20th Century Fox have reportedly been reluctant to have their movies sold on the iTunes store.

Ironically, it was suggested that the movie studios who'd put such pressure on Apple had also been under pressure themselves, this time from retailers of physical copies of movies. While never explicitly stated, these retailers have allegedly threatened to withdraw support from the movie studios if video store competitors such as iTunes manage to reap most of the profits.

Man this is total BS, why would somebody pay $15 bucks for a movie, when you can get the actual DVD for $15 bucks or cheaper that is "DVD Quality" and not compressed? Not to mention the DRM restrictions?

Good point.

I don't think Apple is particularly happy about the decision to raise prices, either, seeing as how iTunes customers are reacting. Still, it seems that that the company has been in a bit of a bind lately.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, but since NBC left, it seems like all these "studios" are (In the words of Eric Cartman) "Breaking their [Apple] balls".

I'm sure as hell never buying a movie from them, now. Not that I was planning it before, but this just cements my feelings.

I don't blame you people for thinking that way. With other alternatives available, this will probably be difficult for Apple.
