Apple patents new video game handheld device - Image 1There have been rumors going around that Apple is planning to delve into the video game market even further by coming up with its own platform, either in the form of a console or a handheld device.

Apple, even up to now, has remained mum on the matter but it seems that the rumors have a basis after all. One search at the database of Trademark Applications and Registrations Retrieval website will yield a patent dated February 5, 2008.

The said patent tells of new "goods and services" that are describe as the following:
  • Toys, games and playthings, namely, handheld units for playing electronic games
  • Handheld units for playing video games
  • Stand alone video game machines
  • Electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only
  • LCD game machines
  • Electronic educational game machines
  • Toys, namely battery-powered computer games
Given the success of mobile gadgets iPhone and iPod Touch, it seems that a portable gaming device from Apple is going to be a sure hit among its loyal fans. While the company has yet to give an official comment, Sony and Nintendo better look after their market as early as now.

» What makes Apple think they can survive in the gaming market?

They can't even get games onto their main format, what chance are they going to have with consoles?

Microsoft had a hell of a time trying to get devs, and they'd been the only choice on a platform that can be used for games for ages.

There are a shedload of games available for OS X. Apple doesn't push the Mac for a gaming platform, and never has done - and now that Vista can be natively installed on Macs, that argument is neither here nor there anyway.

Apple managed to infiltrate the digital music and communication sectors quite well, I think you'll agree!? Why not games?

I think Apple will succeed, if the rumors are true, but as mentioned above, it will be soooo expensive :(

That's me done.

 » Well ...

This is obviously a move by Apple to try and muscle in on apart of computer network they haven't been able to infiltrate. The only problem is -- people who enjoy gaming? Generally hate Mac and everything it stands for.

Think about it. With an Apple gaming machine, you'll do one or all of the following--

1.) Pay an exorberant amount of money for weak and outdated technology.
2.) Have developers forced to code for a kind of hardware they have no use for elseware (working for PS3 well, eh? LOL)
3.) The only thing you'll be able to use it with is 1st party proprietary accessories.
4.) Built in music application compatible only with iTunes and iPods.
5.) Paving the way for AppleTV and entirely Apple-made television sets in the near future.
6.) First, think about how annoyng Mac-fans are already. THEN, add them to the console war. ::shivers::

If this comes to fruition, I'm going to have to side with EA and vote fo a Uni-System.

» apple make trendy lookin stuff

and i believe thats 1 of few big factors that sell items.
the other main 1 is price which we all kno apple fail at.

unless they make a breakthrough in innovation, i say handheld is best left for DS. perhaps a multi touch sensitiv screen could work like iphone or microsoft Surface

devs are having an easy job not to make next gen games for 3 different next gen consoles like last gen so i think theres enough space for 1 more NEXT GEN console as well.

 » Great! *very much sarcastic*

It would be completly idiotic for them to release it now if they really have to do this they need to wait till the competition upgrades. Because then The Big N and sony will just come out with something better.
