Apple files for universal iPhone instant messaging patent - Image 1Apple recently filed a new patent that indicates they may have a new interface planned for the iPhone's text messaging system. Will we see this in a future update? We won't know as of yet, but it's a pretty interesting concept nonetheless.

According to the filing, the text messaging interface will mostly be the same, except for two things. The text box where you write your message will be raised a bit higher up the screen. In its place is a text entry box with a list of suggested words that pop up while you type.

The filing also suggests that the interface could be used for MMS, but judging from the pictures, we're not exactly sure how you'll be able to attach pictures or even video in the message.

At any rate, it is an interesting venture. More practical, at least, than the head-mounted laser display patent that they filed earlier this month. Click on the image above to see the new interface submitted in the filing.
