Apple announces MacBook Air details: It ships in two weeks - Image 1

Looks like it's time to put all those rumors and speculations to rest, folks. Apple has just sentout  tons of new information regarding their MacBook Air as part of the ongoing Macworld San Francisco 2008.

Trust us when we say this is one seriously petite laptop - the MacBook Air's thinnest point measures in at just 0.16 inches while its thickest point measures in at 0.76 inches. This easily makes it the one of the most anorexic production laptops being readied for a commercial release. Here are the rest of the MacBook Air's tech specs:
  • 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display with 1280x800 resolution;
  • 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB L2 cache;
    • Optional upgrade to 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
  • 800 MHz front-side bus;
  • 2GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM;
  • 80GB hard disk drive with Sudden Motion Sensor;
    • Optional upgrade to 64GB solid state drive
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100;
  • Micro-DVI port (includes Micro-DVI to VGA and Micro-DVI to DVI Adapters);
  • built-in iSight video camera;
  • built-in AirPort Extreme 802.11n wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR;
  • one USB 2.0 port;
  • one headphone port;
  • multi-touch TrackPad with support for advanced multi-touch gestures including tap, scroll, pinch, rotate and swipe; and
  • 45 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter.
On the software side of matters, this unit will come packaged with iLife 08 and Mac OS X Leopard. Now, some of you may have noticed the unit's missing a built-in optical drive. Apple is offering an optional MacBook Air SuperDrive external drive for those who absolutely need one, at an expected cost of US$ 99.

The device will depend heavily on its high-speed wireless connections to access movies via the iTunes Store or to back up files to Apple's equally new Time Capsule. Software installation can be achieved by remote-accessing the optical drives on remote PCs or Macs. As for the other built-to-order options and accessories you can choose to go with this new product:
  • Apple USB Ethernet Adapter
  • Apple USB Modem
  • Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter
  • Apple Remote
  • AppleCare Protection Plan
  • iWork '08
  • Logic Express 8
  • Final Cut Express 4
  • Aperture 1.5.
The MacBook Air is expected to be available in two weeks' time (via the Apple Store), at a retail price of US$ 1,799.

wow! that thing's tiny! very cool looking, but the lack of drives and the seeming absence of standard USB slots and Ethernet puts me off...

still... very sleek!

well... have an usb port and with the technology of remote disc free you of a disc drive but anyway is needed for burning so I will use the external one but it's cool you can install a program in another mac or PC...

The ethernet port well.. even my PC I have it wireless... I never connect it in the ethernet...

It's cool really but I hate that color, I love the black and white not that grey and that price tag is so high soo... I will pass...
