Apple Store - Image 1With the aftermath of iPhone's phenomenal success, Apple found its Apple Stores too crowded with curious onlookers to ogle the iPhone and the newer iPods. Apple's solution? Charge a US$ 5 entrance fee to gain access into Apple Stores.

Aside from the entrance fee, Apple also had Apple "Muscleheads" guarding the entrance. Apple's vice president of retail outlets, Vince Sciopano, explains the move:

Part of the move was to limit crowds to keep the stores safe, but also we wanted to keep the right kind of people in the stores. By 'right kind of people' I mean true Apple customers with money, willing to pay just to look at our newest wares.

Shades of elitism? Nevertheless, reaction in Canoga Park, California's Apple Store was quite positive. One customer, Alexander Hu, said, "I don't mind paying $5 to get into the store, if it keeps out the iPhone gawkers and Windows lusers who want to drool over the new Macs."

However, some customers criticized Apple's new store policy, saying that the move might make Apple look like "elite snobs".

Sciopano's reply to the criticism? "That's exactly the case."

That's the strategy you need to take when you can't make enough money selling iMacs to compete with PCs.

As an Apple computer and ipod owner, I have to say this is a lame move by Apple. This is why Apple will eventually fail in my opinion, elitist marketing strategies that don't cater to the majority of people. There's better ways to keep gawkers out than charging EVERYONE $5 dollars.

Maybe it's time to build a Linux box...

» they give 5 bucks back to buyers

that would make perfect sense, if it was crowd control in the first place. but since they did not mention return to buying consumer, the crowd control is just an excuse to make more money.

This is about one of the most stupidest things I have ever herd. I like the part about "we wanted to keep the right kind of people in the stores. By 'right kind of people' I mean true Apple customers with money" By that they mean no blacks and other poor people such as my self. Apple seem more and more content on have a specific social and economical class to view and buy there products. The Apple is the new swastika.

"" By 'right kind of people' I mean true Apple customers with money"""
that should cover my purchase tax. i just got my mac through mail instead. you walk into the store and do you need help, just say do you work here. come in as in employee instead and help trick the company instead or be security. i had to costumize my mac because they don't have it in stores only online way. just get a giant white board cover the whole store and then nobody won't be able to get in or out, ahahahahaha for apple store workers.
the main reason apple has too many costumer cause its small and they don't have enough apple stores around the world. of course they have best buy or target to have some of those items.
   by wtf (Unregistered) - 2007-07-26
 » wtf

Wouldnt apple want more sales, and so why would they shun off a piece of the market by charging ppl at the door. screw the clubs. see me walk up in to the store im a flirt...
   by waterlord (Unregistered) - 2007-07-27
 » not too bad

apple usually has plans for big stores and little stores. so if anything the larger stores that have over 100 people at a time may work like the stores in california and new york. meanwhile smaller stores probably wont do it because they bring in too much business already...especially those that are in malls. we'll have to see. you know how apple is. first they decide on something then at the last minute they do somethin different.
