Though "nightmarish" is way too harsh a word, but homebrew developer ZodTTD described current Apple homebrew development as such on a recent blog post. The problem, as the dev sees it, really lay on three things - three similar yet so separate things: the three jailbreak releases for the previously rolled out Apple Software version 1.1.3, all of which the homebrew coder would have to develop ZodTTD-branded apps on. According to the homebrew dev who has feet on both the Sony PlayStation Portable scene and the Apple iPhone, iPod scene, the real issue with the jailbreaks is how their developers created them totally different from one another. Prior to 1.1.3, users have been content to use var/root/ as their storage for media and settings. Now, however, that isn't the case anymore. Natetrue's own version of the firmware uses the legacy root user, so that wasn't really a problem. But it did have other issues that needed to be addressed, and thus ZodTTD will have to weave a way around them if they can't be resolved. For NerveGas' version, the user "mobile" was used so settings and media will have to be relocated, or at least accommodated for users of this firmware. Unfortunately, there's a third, and planetbeing's own release also uses "mobile" as a user when running applications, though ZodTTD also discovered problems in its innards. The developer revealed that the issue was very apparent prior to Josephine version 1.5.0's release, though he does offer a quick ownership fix for those encountering problems with user directory ownership. Now ZodTTD is working on plausible fixes to get the homebrew applications to work across all three releases, addressing unique issues on each one with a single software. |
