Apple's decision to call their upcoming mobile device the "iPhone" has caused a whole case file's worth of trouble. Cisco has complained about Apple using the iPhone trademark, and already it has sparked debates far and wide, all speculating about Apple changing the name in time for its launch this June. Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry says that this name change will be an eventual step for Apple to take. He bases this theory on conversations with "sources" that are "close" to the iPhone labs. A lot of us could probably agree with this. As we've said, countless people have already expressed the same sentiments of Apple doing a name change for the iPhone. In fact, we've heard a couple of comments from our beloved QJ readers already, and all of them have valid points and are worth pointing out. Bob: To be honest, the iPhone name will either be licensed from Cisco or Apple will change it to iMobile, iCell, AppleCell or something. Just look at iTV which is now Apple TV. They would not have got away with iTV in the UK as there is a company with the very same name. xche78x: It's a mishap on Apple's side. Cisco really owns the iPhone name. So, the product should find a new name so it can be launched for the mass market. neok182: Apple was very wrong for going ahead and calling it that before they finished negotiations with Cisco. And now they're paying for it. Cisco was nice enough to even talk about letting them use it... Now, they'll lose this case and have to rename the phone. After everyone now knows it as the iPhone. This is just the first thing to hurt it... As nice as the phone is and I'd love to have one myself, it has a very bumpy road ahead of it. Fair exchange of ideas, guys. We all have our thoughts on the issue but the people have spoken. A name change would have to be inevitable. |

Its DUM. Apple should loose all of their compagny. Or at least they should be fraged. Steve Jobs is an arsehole because of the way he acts. You dont critisize a product not even in your god forsaken categorie. So go to hell Steve Jobs
I think Steve Jobs should just go ahead and put out an action figure with his likeness that
when you pull the string says phrases like "I'll Sue", and "Mac's don't get viruses",
and "I'm the pitcher, you're the catcher" and he can call it the iSux.
My Comment 'Just look at iTV which is now Apple TV ... there is a company with the very same name.' That other company (ITV plc) is a broadcasting company which would have completely conflicted with Apple TV being called iTV on a television. They even own the (now defunct, but still legally own) 'itv digital set top box' (digital TV signal recievers for your TV).
Unless Apple take a huge licencing deal which I doubt they would want another company taking cuts out of their pie or spend millions in the courts trying to prove they own the i[name] trademark because of the number of iPods owned they will change it easily. But will the new name be as catchy and easily noticed as an Apple brand as the iPhone would have?
yay i feel special lol.
and it will be very interesting to see what happens to the iPhone over the next few months.
Has nobody bothered to think that Cisco stole the "i" prefix from apple if it hadnt have been for apple then there wouldnt be an iPhone from Cisco and if apple gets the "i" prefix copyrighted like they are trying to then Cisco will have to rename their product
The world doesnt work like that.
Cisco, the netowrking giant by no means a small company, owns FULLY the trademark to 'iPhone'. They therefore have every right to sue apple for infringing upon this trademark. No 'i' trademark would make a damn difference and if you even know what you are on about, 'i' isnt available to be copyrighted.
@daveireland: you cant own a letter. Lots of things have used the i to show that they're an ipod accessory. iHome (though they now make stuff for the zune as well) the small iBlaster speakers. Yes apple does use it for the media players but they cant own it.
There are certain things that you cant own the rights to no matter what and the letter i is one of them.
who cares how they call the darn thing, call it isux, ibutt... ill buy the darn thing however they call it, see the itv later they change the name to appletv so who cares?
Wait for the guy that said that Cisco stole the i from apple, apple took the mp3 style video from Sony as well as the iphone is merely another pda phone. So save a few hundred and go buy a palm treo
It doesn't work like that, I could invent a bionic banana and call it iPhone but they wouldn't be able to sue me because its not the same type of product they trademarked the name for. This is the same in this case, Cisco trademarked the name iPhone for a certain type of phone, Apple's doesn't fall into the same category of phones that Cisco has. So this case was solved before it even started. Hell Cisco just took the name iPhone because of all the hype and confuse customers into buying it.
