smcFanControl

Life's a b1tch. It's such a tease. Because right now, I'm thinking two things: 1) I should have waited for the MacBook Pro instead of getting a PowerBook, and 2) I wish this app could run on my PowerBook. Until my new battery arrives, my PowerBook is a disaster waiting to happen. And so, an app like smcFanControl v1.1 from Hendrik Holtmann is a godsend.

It allows you to control your internal fans manually to cool down your MacBook Pro. It also has an "auto-apply launch" feature so that you don't have to manually set it over and over again after every restart. Here's what's new in v1.1:
  • Support for Mac Mini (intel) added
  • Start hidden/in background option added
  • Option to sync sliders on MacBook Pro for easier control
  • Window position is now remembered
  • Bugfix: Fan #2 on MBP could not be controlled separately
  • Bugfix: Changes in keychain-access to prevent crashes
See? Now if only we can use this on our PowerBooks. Meh. You MacBook Pro users sure are lucky.

Update: Hendrik Holtmann has made two updates to address the bugs of smcFanControl v1.1. Version 1.11 has the following changes: German and Italian localization was added and three bugs were fixed (Admin-Accounts with empty passwords can now authenticate successfully; when hidden, smcfancontrol doesn't eat up cpu-cycles anymore; users with special characters in password can now authenticate successfully). Version 1.12 added to that the following: a FAQ, French localization, and a bugfix (some debug code was removed). All told, this is a far, far better thing than the v1.1!

Now it's your turn to share your love. Thank the hard-working guy and encourage him to keep this project going!
